Details
The Bihar Agricultural University was established as the second agricultural university of the state on August 5, 2010 at the initiative of visionary Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar who is aiming at ensuring rainbow revolution in the state.
The main campus of the newly created university is located at the erstwhile Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour. The university has 8 colleges (6 crop sciences + 1 Veterinary and 1 dairy science) and 12 research stations spread in 3 agro ecological zone of Bihar. The University also has 20 K V Ks established 20 of the 25 districts falling under the jurisdiction of the university.
Vision
The Bihar Agricultural University was established with objective of improving quality of life of people of state especially famers constituting more than two third of the population. Having set ultimate goal of benefitting society of large the university intends of achieve it by imparting word-class need based agricultural education, research, extension and public service.
Mandate
The mutually supporting mandates of University in the field of agricultural education, research and extension are:
Education: Developing quality human-ware and suitable trained human resources through professional programmer in agriculture and allied fields.
Research: Undertaking mutually reinforcing basic, applied and adaptive research besides acquiring and refining technologies for addressing the present and future problems in the field of agriculture. Capturing new opportunities that could prove beneficial for large number of people involved in farm activities.
Extension: ensuring transfer of technology effectively and extending assistance in adoption of technology with vibrant extension services taking into account the socio economic conditions of the targeted groups besides agro-ecological security needs.
Training: Establishing centre for excellence in training for capacity building of extension professional. Paraprofessionals as well as vocational training of adults and youths and women through conventional as well as open & distance learning.
Agricultural Education
Bihar Agricultural University is presently running under graduate programmes in agriculture. Horticulture. Veterinary science and diary technology. The university is imparting post-graduation level education in respective fields. BAU is one of the first State Agricultural Universities to have started Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning to train faculty members in Teaching Technology and propagate goods teaching practices for quality learning. University firmly believes in holistic development of students and organizes occasional lectures of exports on career, motivation and leadership. Besides training and workshop on communication skill & personality development are also organized.
Agricultural Research
Bihar Agricultural University has been assigned responsibility of crop improvement, augmenting horticulture and live-stock production apart from management of agricultural activities and carrying out researches that could improve overall agriculture production in agro climatic zones II, III A and IIIB comprising larger part of the state. Scientists are also working in improvement of natural and genetic resource management, diversification of production systems. And value-added crop and livestock products. Social, economic and policy research are the integral component of research to better target sustainable development and to enhance the uptake and impact of the research outputs. The research programs are categorized in six sub groups viz., crop improvement, natural resource management, crop protection, social sciences, product development and marketing and animal science. These research programs are mandate of different units of the university i.e., Colleges of Agriculture at Sabour, Buxar, Saharsa, Purnea and Kishanganj; College of Horticulture at Noorsarai, Nalanda; Bihar Veterinary College and Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology at Patna and various regional research stations in form of students project, plan and non-plan projects.
The university has developed collaboration with number national and international institutes of repute. It has a strong linkage with the ICAR institutes including Directorate of Rice Research, Directorate of wheat Research, Indian Institute of Pulse Research, Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, India Institute of Farming System Research, Directorate of Maize Research, Central Plantation Crop Research Institute, Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture, National Dairy Research Institute, Indian Veterinary Research Institute and several others.
